Google searches have been going crazy recently for those of us who want to find out about ‘vagina scented candles’. This is, without doubt, a bold name for a candle so let’s dig down into why the internet is going crazy for this uniquely scented candle.
Where did the vagina scented candle come from?
It all started when Gwyneth Paltrow made a candle called ‘This Smells Like My Vagina’ for her website, Goop.
To the average person, this may not seem like a go-to buy for a candle. Questions like – why? What does it smell like? Would be high on the agenda. It even retailed at a strong 75 dollars. As soon as it went on sale, it sold out!
Goop is no stranger to marketing vagina-based products, either. They launched yoni eggs made from jade for insertion into the vagina. This product led to a strong critique from gynaecologists who cited health and safety concerns.
Goop’s new candle, however, hasn’t had the same negative reception and has been a commercial home-run for the brand.
What does Goop’s vagina scented candle smell like?
To the uninitiated, it may come as a welcome surprise that the candle doesn’t actually smell like a vagina.
According to the website,
a funny, gorgeous, sexy, and beautifully unexpected scent, this candle is made with geranium, citrusy bergamot, and cedar absolutes juxtaposed with Damask rose and ambrette seed to put us in mind of fantasy, seduction, and a sophisticated warmth.
It was created with the help of perfumer Douglas Little, who co-creates all of the Goop fragrances alongside founder Gwyneth Paltrow.
This smells like my vagina’s response on social media
Although the candle sells well, this didn’t stop people taking to social media to joke about the candle.
The description of that Gwyneth Paltrow candle is very vague isn’t it… This smells like my vagina. Ai but at what stage Gwyn, fresh out of the bath vagina or disco minge!— Lauren (@lmjwales) February 6, 2020
And it didn’t stop there.
The ‘This Smells Like My Penis’ candle
A Canadian company, Taxi, decided to release a candle called ‘This Smells Like My Penis,’ in response.
The company created its candle in response to Goop’s $75 “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle, pricing it at $100 to highlight Canada’s gender pay gap.
According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, women in Canada are paid 75 cents for every dollar a man makes.
But in one final nod to the power of Goop, the ‘This Smells Like My Penis’ website is now down. It seems that Goop’s candle has seen off the competition from a plucky upstart.
